On March 13 at 10:30 AM, a human chain protest was held on the road in front of Tala Upazila Parishad, demanding justice and punishment for perpetrators of violence against women and children across the country. The protest rally started from the Tala office of Parittran, marching through Tala Government College Road and Press Club Road before converging at the Upazila Parishad premises. The event was presided over by Konkona Das, President of the Tetulia Union branch of the Bangladesh Dalit Parishad (BDP).
The demonstration was jointly organized by the non-governmental organization Parittran and the Bangladesh Dalit Parishad. Several individuals expressed solidarity and delivered speeches, including journalists Mostafizur Rahman Rentu and Julfikar Raihan, as well as Palash Das, General Secretary of the Tala Upazila branch of BDP, along with Swapna Das and Sabiha Khatun. The event was moderated by Md. Rabiul Islam, Program Coordinator of Parittran.
During the protest, speakers highlighted that in the months of January and February alone, 294 women and children were subjected to various forms of violence. Among them, 96 were victims of rape and gang rape—an alarming situation that no conscientious person can tolerate. They further stated that rapists often escape justice due to legal loopholes and political protection, which perpetuates the cycle of violence against women.
The speakers urged the current government to reform and enforce rape laws immediately. They demanded that perpetrators be brought to justice through a fast-track tribunal to ensure exemplary punishment. They also emphasized that unless violence against women is eradicated, their participation in various sectors and overall development progress will continue to be hindered. The state must take immediate responsibility to ensure the safety of women and children and guarantee justice for all injustices committed against them.
