Executive summary

Protecting Human Rights (PHR) is a five-years program to reduce the high prevalence of domestic violence and other related human rights. violation in Bangladesh. Funded by USAID, the program is implemented by Plan International Bangladesh in partnership with Parittran.

Successes and Impacts of PHR in Jessore District (Manirampur Upazila)

  • Social Protection Groups (SPGs) formed & continuously operating in all 17 target unions. Each SPG is composed of members from the Union Parishad (i.e., local government), religious leaders, teachers, social workers, the union marriage registrar, doctors, students, and other key community leaders. Also formed 153 Ward committee to prevent CM.
  • Activation of Upazila VAWC Committee by merging Upazila Human Rights Advocacy Forum.
  • 2,778 (male 326) legal complaints handled by LC for survivors of violence, among that 1899 settled through ADR and spouse counseling.
  • 73 cases filed by PHR, among that 43 disposed. Besides that 111 cases referred to other legal aid organization (DLAC-76, Thana-16, NGO-19).
  • 259 survivors got dower @ amount of 1,06,66620 (78% of actual dower) at the time of separation or compromise divorce.
    3,803 women and families helped by 34 social workers who provide psychosocial counseling, health and medical referrals, contacts for lawyers, livelihood support and other survivor services.
  • 1562 survivors got other services (training, livelihood, medical etc.) through referral service.
  • 120 high school formed Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee to prevent school level SH incidents, among that 113 (46 permanently, 67 temporarily) school set up complain box. Although PHR provided 120 complain box to all 120 schools by trained-up SHP committee.
  • Women survivor corner set up at Monirampur police station to hear complain of women/children with confidentiality.
  • 5,354 students from 37 secondary schools and Youth Group of Monirampur College, received training on DV, sexual harassment, child marriage and gender sensitivity.
  • All the 17 union parishads (local governments) have allocated their funds to address DV, child marriage survivors and among that five unions spent some amount for awareness/ survivor support.
  • 505 child marriages prevented in targeted unions of the upazila, among that 218 already been happened outside of upazila.

Objective:

To reduce the high prevalence of DV and other related human rights abuses in targeted areas of Bangladesh

Specific objective :

The Organization will support PHR regional office though organizing advocacy, public awareness event to address domestic violence.
